FAQ

A little bit more about me, Meg.
Send me a message if you have more questions I would love to answer them.

Where and what did you study?

I started studying for my diploma in Visual Arts and Design at The Eastern Institute Of Technology in Hawke’s Bay in 2012, 2013 I moved over to the degree but failed my last assignment so I found a job in 2014 until I could resit my assignment (which I ended up passing), 2015 I passed my second to last year, and this year (2016) I’ve almost graduated! You could say it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster, but I’ve stuck in there!

At what age did you start illustrating? Have you always been good at it?

I have memories as early as 5 years old drawing or making artwork that stood out more than any of my other subjects. When I was 10 years old, that’s when I really started to get into illustration. I didn’t know about the word illustration until about 2012/2013, so it was just ‘manga’ and ‘drawing’ to me back then. My dad used to say he would never see me in front of a movie/the TV without a pad of paper and a pencil.
Art has really been the only thing I can properly say I understand and have some talent in, so that’s why I decided to keep at it and study it.

Who is your all time favourite artist or illustrator?

Fran Meneses! I discovered her in 2015, and I’ve been hooked ever since! Her style has heavily influenced my practice to date, and I don’t see myself ever being disinterested. I’ve discovered a lot of artists since finding her.

How did you learn to illustrate? Did you take any workshops?

I used to take art classes when I was younger, but they never did anything. I took pottery classes as well, but in all honesty, hiring books out at the library every week was what excelled my skills. Also not understanding maths, I filled my maths books up with doodles and sketches. I started off with hiring Manga books, so I’ll have to agree that those books definitely influenced my style as well.

What materials do you use? What are your favourite pencils?

The media I’m most comfortable with, are my Staedtler mechanical 0.5mm HB pencil, and my pack of Staedtler pigment liner 6 pack.
I enjoy using water colour and Faber Castell polychromo colour pencils, and sometimes I enjoy using a bit of photoshop with my Wacom bamboo tablet.

What camera do you use for photos and to record your videos?

I use my Nikon D5100 which I purchased back in 2012, with my 18-50mm (if I remember correctly) lens. On my vlogs I mainly used my iPhone 5S, but now with my 6S I have yet to film a new vlog. I’m so lazy!
